Online Casinos Not the Issue
The State of Kentucky has made headlines over the past eight months because of
the state governor’s attempts to hijack online casino domain names in the name
of securing the land gambling and betting industry in the state. The horse
tracks though see a different enemy – the lack of gambling variety, as the
culprit for lost revenues at the horse races. Kentucky is one of the only states
that still does not allow slot machines and alternative gambling at the race
tracks. Although Governor Steve Beshear has spoken out against the online
casinos specifically, the horse racetracks have joined forces in an appeal to
the state to legalize slot machines at the tracks or risk some pretty serious
negative impact at the horse races.
The fact of the matter is simple, Kentucky bills itself as one of the top
horseracing states in the country and hosts many of the most famous and popular
horse races in the industry. But even though Kentucky has a long history of
preeminence in the industry, the racetracks are unable to compete with
racetracks in nearby states because of smaller purse sizes. Across the US the
horse racetracks have begun to implement slot machines at the tracks as a way to
entice more punters to come as well as to use the slots revenue as a way to bump
up purses offered. Kentucky racetracks aren’t necessarily competing with the
online casinos as Governor Beshear claims, the decline in the industry is coming
from actual competition from the other racetracks.
The racetracks teamed up and all showed a united front in a press conference
appeal to the state for the legalization of slot machines at the racetracks. The
state is still monkeying around with the online casino gambling situation while
the state’s horseracing venues are pleading for support now before all of the
quality horses, races, and jockeys leave the state for greener pastures. |
