Libelous Comments Spread
Betfair is the largest global online casino gambling and betting company;
Betfair has a truly international base of gamblers and boasts the most extensive
network in the whole of the industry. The company has really paved the way in
the internet gambling industry and created a lot of new avenues for marketing
and sponsorship strategies that have really boosted the reputation of the online
betting industry. A recent court case in Ireland has sided with the betting
company for this round of the trial – it is surely to go to the appeals court.
Betfair’s chat rooms are used as a sounding board for the thousands of Betfair
users all over the world – and Betfair alleges that it should not be responsible
for each and every comment that is made on the gambling site.
The Irish High Court ruled that Betfair was not, in fact, responsible for the
libelous comments that were made allegedly made against Seamus Mulvaney and
Ellen Martin. The judge ruled to protect the rights of the internet based
companies to not be responsible for each and every comment that is made by a
third party on the site. The judge has only made a preliminary ruling in the
case, so it will likely go further through the courts, but Betfair is pleased
with the initial results.
Basically, this case would set a very real precedent in the internet industry –
not just for the online casinos and betting companies, but for the whole of the
industry. If it passes through all of the way and Betfair is not held
responsible, then it confirms the EU protection standards that are in place for
companies that host chat rooms and forums on their servers. |
