Some Intense Criticism
The European Commission has waged war over the past several years against
European online casino gambling monopolies. Despite all of the hard work and
negotiations though the Commission has only succeeded to stop about have of the
dozen or so illegal monopoly cases through negotiations in addition to threats
that countries found in non-compliance would be take to the European Court of
Justice. Denmark is one of the more stubborn of the countries that not only has
banned foreign online casinos from the country with monopolistic legislation,
but the country is now looking to block foreign sites at the ISP level. The
Danish government is now facing some pretty harsh comparisons because of the
government’s announcement that online casinos will be blocked by ISPs –
something that countries like China and North Korea.
Basically, the new attempts to block online casinos at the ISP level are
considered hypocritical by a lot of the industry and other internet analysts
have some dooms-day type criticism about the effect that this will have on
internet neutrality and the rights of the public to use the Internet without
censored content. Essentially, the detractors note that comparing the online
casinos to such negatives as blocking child pornography are grossly unfair. If
the government crosses the line and agrees to block foreign online casino sites,
but still allows the state monopoly, there is an extremely hypocrital nature to
the legislation that does not bode well.
Comparisons to China and North Korea indicate that a lot of critics in the
online casino industry fear that this is a touchy subject but that ISP
censorship will make the Danish government about as overly controlling as China.
The Danes could face some severe future restrictions on internet content if this
is allowed to pass though and actually happen. The foreign internet casinos
facing a block of the Danish market are livid and plan to pursue the issue into
the high courts if necessary; the Commission is also working hard to stop this
from happening. |
