Fraud Hits Mobile Industry
Online casino gamblers have learned over the past several years to be very
cautious when it comes to picking new gambling sites and sharing personal
information over the Web. Mobile internet gambling users in Qatar are now
learning the same lesson –that fraudsters will go to huge lengths to perpetrate
identity theft and clean out a player’s bank account. Mobile online casinos in
Qatar have been issuing large-scale warnings to internet gamblers concerning a
new text messaging scam that uses sophisticated telephone and text messaging
technology to tell mobile users that they are the lucky winners of a
European-based lottery.
The scam is just another form of phishing fraud so that the fraudsters can
convince Qatar residents to release personal family details and bank/credit card
numbers. The scam is specifically targeting mobile users in the Middle East –and
not just mobile online casino gamblers either. The phishing scam sends out a
text message to mobile users informing them of the lottery win and giving them a
phone number to call and find out more about the prize. The telephone number is
routed through Liechtenstein (authorities do not believe that the fraud is
originating from this area) and instructs the potential winner in Arabic about
the prize they have just won – and then the automated systems takes them through
a collection of their personal and banking information.
The Qatar authorities are also issuing the warning and have also attempted to
block the numbers that the fraudsters are using for the call-in line – around 20
numbers have been blocked but the scam consistently continues under a different
number. Qatar text and online mobile users are being heavily warned against
responding to any sort of text message that indicates that they have won money. |
