Controversy in the Face of Money
The Dutch government has just shown a pretty ambiguous stance on the offshore
online casino gambling situation. The Netherlands is one of the controversial
countries that is blocking foreign internet gambling companies in an effort to
sustain state monopolies and “protect” Dutch gamblers from the ills associated
with internet gambling. The Dutch government has been in heated negotiations
with the European Commission because of the government’s refusal to comply with
requests for an open and free internet gambling market that welcomes competition
from offshore online casinos. A hypocritical decision that has many scratching
their heads is the ruling that a Dutch gambler who hit a jackpot of $4.3 million
will be allowed to keep her winnings as long as she pays out a portion of the
jackpot to the Dutch tax authorities – not a decision that upholds the foreign
internet ban very thoroughly.
The 33-year old Dutch gambler won a Euro $4.3 million jackpot form Unibet just
this month but had to spend agonizing weeks while the government contemplated
allowing her to keep the winnings. The Netherlands has really tried to take a
strong stance against the online casinos, but this new situation indicates that
the officials actually have a more fluctuating stance once actually faced with
the huge tax revenues available from actual internet gambling winnings.
The winner was very candid about where the money is going – she does acknowledge
that a substaintial portion of the win is going to go to the Dutch government.
She notes, "About $1.1 million euros will go to the taxman, with the rest I want
to make my family happy.” The whole of the online casino gambling industry was a
bit surprised that the Dutch government would choose to enforce such
hypocritical gambling policies. |
