The Damming of China
The Chinese government has a lot of policies that conflict with the ideals and
principles of the Western world – but that doesn’t mean that the Chinese
government has any intention of altering the policies just because the US and
Europe don’t agree on the Chinese legislation. The Dalai Lama and Tibet is one
of the areas of extreme conflict where the Chinese government refuses to really
even discuss the issue with the Western world. Now, a pressing issue concerning
the freedom of expression in China is heating up the public debate as the
Chinese government institutes new internet censorship laws that are designed to
block the foreign online casinos from accessing the Chinese market. The Chinese
police have taken a keen interest over the past several years in eliminating
illegal online gambling rings. The “Green Dam” filtering technology is the star
player in the new debate and issue.
Basically, the Chinese government is adamant that it has the right to protect
citizens and children in particular from the dangers of online casinos by not
only blocking the sites at the Internet Service Provider (ISP) level, but by
also now requiring that all computers sold in the country have the “Green Dam”
software installed and integrated into the system. This software has been
configured to block pornography and online casino gambling sites according to
the Chinese government, and will not be used in the future to block other sites.
The international community feels that this strong step to block the online
casinos is actually against the WTO policies concerning freedom of expression.
Censorship of the internet is a huge concern in the global marketplace right now
and these actions by the Chinese government indicate a dangerous precedence is
forming for the justification of personal rights infringement on a global level. |
