WTO a Big Factor for Online Casinos
The American online casino gambling situation is only continuing to heat up and
gain momentum this month as the World Trade Organization begins to reassert
claims that the US’ current internet gambling policy is in direct violation of
international treaties for fair trade. The Bush Administration was notoriously
known for implementing inconsistent policies that only applied when the WTO’s
rulings were in accordance with the Administration’s particularly conservative
beliefs. The Obama Administration has taken a completely different tactic toward
the issue about offshore online casinos accessing the US market –his admin has
been silent on the issue up until now claiming a need to focus on reinvigorating
the US economy as the recession hits hard. But this is not sitting well with the
European Union and the WTO organization and pressure from this front may very
well force the US to readdress the online gambling situation in the very near
future.
The conservative’s case is growing weaker by the day as the international
community begins to voice opposition to the US government’s continued
implementation and enforcement of the UIGEA. The offshore online casinos were
forced out of the US market as a result of the UIGEA and the Obama
Administration has done nothing to address its position on internet gambling.
The EU is pushing forward on compensation and damage claims that could reach as
high as $100 billion because of the US’s discriminatory policies that protect
forms of US internet gambling but specifically block offshore and foreign
companies. The EU claims that this law is in direct contravention to the notion
of personal freedom that is so integral to the American democratic system.
Barney Frank has noted that the renewed effort from the WTO and the EU is likely
going to help push along his efforts to repeal the UIGEA and instead implement a
licensing and regulatory system that would allow foreign online casinos to enter
the market with licenses and following strict regulations. |
