Victory for the US
The United States Department of Justice has a long-running case against the
founders and operators of the now de-bunk Bet-on-Sports online casino and
betting company. Bet-on-Sports has been the pet project of the DoJ for some time
now as the company operated illegally in the US market – but even before the
controversial UIGEA. In this case, the company was perpretrating fraud and the
founders of the company, Gary Kaplan and David Carruthers have been facing
charges for years now. The cases have taken a very long time to process through,
and the case against Carruthers is still actually running.
As for Kaplan though, as a founder of the online caisno gambling company he has
been facing some very serious fines and jail time for his involvement. And
although both Kaplan and Carruthers pleaded not-guilty to the initial charges,
that decision proved unwise and delayed the processing of their cases. A new
report out of the industry though indicates that Kaplan’s family has pled guilty
to several criminal charges and have agreed to turn over millions to the US
government as they were illegally gotten.
Kaplan’s former personal assistant and his brother and sister have all three
pled guilty to the charges and will pay up millions to be done with the case.
The guilty plea is a major victory for the DoJ in continuing to pursue legal
action against Kaplan and Carruthers for their illegal online casino betting
operation. It’s key to note that these charges are largely unrelated to the
UIGEA and the charges that are being brought against foreign and EU based online
gambling operators for their involvement in the US market. |
