In a Gambling Utopia: China
China is the golden frontier for the online casino gambling industry. The
population is absolutely huge and an increasing number of Chinese have regular
access to high-speed internet. The internet boom has occurred in China, but the
Chinese government is strictly against the online casinos. There are rumors that
this market may open within the next decade, but for now, the market is strictly
closed to internet gambling. The major gambling operators have rapidly begun to
expand into the lucrative Chinese market through the offering of unique internet
skill and fun gaming. The Chinese government allows online gaming to occur but
is actually actively looking for ways to further block the internet gambling
content.
The Chinese government sparked a lot of controversy last month with the
announcement that the government was now requiring all new computers sold in the
country to contain content blocking software known as Green Dam. The
announcement of this extreme form of censorship was met with outrage by the
Chinese people, the blogosphere ignited with protests. The international
community expressed some very real concerns that this level of control would set
a dangerous precedence.
The government, ultimately, has put the Green Dam project on hold but the
possibility is still out there. When the new measure was first introduced the
Chinese government insisted that this new software would only be used to block
pornography and online casino gambling content. Even with that assurance though,
the Green Dam software would give the government an even scarier level of
control over what internet content the Chinese population is allowed to consume. |
