In a Gambling Utopia: The Land Down Under
The internet gambling industry is expanding rapidly into the global market. The
internet is an extremely pervasive medium and although many nations are trying a
variety of legislation, regulations, and other measures to stop the growth of
online casinos, there is really only one way – censorship. That word leaves a
bad taste in the mouths of many as the notion of censorship of the internet
becomes an international issue. Australia recently met with a lot of criticism
when the government proposed new measures that would censor the content Aussies
can access from the ISP level. This sort of censorship from a developed country
is simply unacceptable, even if it is the only solution the government has come
up with to block online casinos.
There is a thriving betting market in Australia, but the online casinos are
still illegal although they are, naturally, several sites still operating within
the market and able to access Aussie gamblers. Australia is struggling with
striking a balance between control of the online casino market, and stepping
into the personal freedoms of Aussies. The US has found out the hard way that
blocks on the financial transactions with internet gambling companies is largely
ineffective and other nations are finding it difficult to come up with
alternative solutions.
The public outcry over the proposed internet censorship in Australia was likely
large enough to prevent the government from trying that step again. But,
although internet betting sites are flourishing legally in the Aussie market,
the government allegedly fears social ills that would accompany the launch of a
regulated online casino gambling market; social ills such as under age gambling
and even an increase in gambling addictions. |
