An Uphill Struggle
The European Union is back at it again in the pursuit of negotiations and new
terms on the online casino gambling issues, or more specifically the US’
controversial UIGEA legislation. The UIGEA bans offshore and foreign online
casinos from the US market put then provides specific carve-outs for US based
companies. The EU has actively sought to enter into negotiations and discussions
with the US, but the US Trade Representatives and the US officials have not
taken the issue very seriously. The EU has accused the US of breaking
international trade agreements where internet gambling is concerned yet the
nation is unwilling to compensate those countries negatively affected.
The US protectionist policies have really financially damaged many EU-based
online casinos that were operating in the US market prior to the UIGEA. These
companies were forced to immediately withdraw from the market. And perhaps the
biggest slap in the face to the EU is the fact that the US government has
actually fined several of these internet gambling companies for their activity
in the US market. The EU is actively requesting that the US government alter the
UIGEA legislation that unfairly targets foreign online casinos and protects only
US gambling interests.
One of the biggest battles for the EU delegates has even been securing meetings
with the US officials. The USTR signed an undisclosed trade compensation
settlement with the EU more than a year ago and have now closed the book on the
subject. Although there has been no information released on the details of the
settlement, it didn’t take long for the EU online casinos to demand further
action on their behalf from the EU government against the protectionist US
policies. |
