It's Just too Slow for Online Casinos
The process of justice in the European Union is turning out to be exceedingly
slow – and that is cause enough to have some domestic and international groups
peeved. The European online casinos that have been patiently waiting for full
access to the European market, without the restrictions of roughly a dozen
gambling monopolies, have a lot longer to wait. The situation is just taking a
ridiculously long time right now and there seems to be no reason for it. The
European Commission has entered into negotiations with all of the nations in
question and has been for some time – years even. But what on heavens is taking
so long? It’s as if the Commission is unsure of its legal standing despite the
fact that EU trade policies and founding principles support the Commission’s
attempts to create a free and open online casino gambling market.
It really appears as if the Commission is just dragging its heels on this
subject and is forcing the European online casinos to take a stand on their own.
The Commission’s decision to begin issuing warnings to those countries with
internet gambling monopolies was a long time coming and was actually applauded
by the online casino gambling industry. The negotiations have been going on for
years and there has been very little positive movement in the cases. It really
does appear that it is time to really bring in the big guns on the issue, the
European Court if Justice.
The ECoJ has the power to really levy huge fines against those nations that are
blocking other EU online casino gambling companies from their markets for
protectionist reasons. But, on another exasperating note, the situation still
seems a little hopeless. Although the threat of court action has been issued, no
country has actually been referred to the ECoJ – that’s when the Commission will
likely really start to seem some movement from those nations in question. |
