A Single Voice
The European online casino gambling industry is lucky to have the Remote gaming
Association (RGA) on its side throughout the tumultuous process of leveling the
playing field in the European Union as well as the United States markets. Both
of these major markets have some very real kinks and issues that need to be
straightened out and the RGA acts as a united voice for all of the largest
online casino gambling groups in Europe. The major gambling groups have a very
real interest in a free and regulated EU market – the same holds true for the
United States. The European Commission is actively working on ending the state
internet gambling monopolies. As for the issues with the US market, the RGA has
outlined some of the key complaints about the discriminatory US laws and the EU
delegates are now set on negotiating with the United States on more favorable
legislation that meets with previously signed trade agreements.
The RGA has been in operation for just shy of four years and was formed with the
joining of two previously separate but similarly functioning internet gambling
associations. Now, the RGA is a powerful body that operates on behalf of the
European online casinos and companies operating within many sectors of the
internet gambling industry. As the negotiations with the United States begin in
earnest, something that is a long time coming, the World Trade Organization and
the European Union are receptive to the RGA outlining its chief problems with
the US market and the specific discriminatory qualities of the UIGEA on behalf
of the European online casinos.
With the new administration in place there is a sliver of hope that the US Trade
Representatives will now come to the table willing to negotiate. The WTO is on
the side of the EU and the ongoing dismissal of WTO requests and mandates by the
WTO has the potential to threaten the power and legitimacy of the organization –
this would have serious and negative side effects in negotiations with other
nations, such as China, down the line. |
