A Little Recap: 1
The US online casino gambling issue has been a major problem for some time –
basically since November of 2006 when the UIGEA was rushed into law in a
late-night session of congress. The UIGEA is a highly controversial piece of
legislation that is mentioned extensively in the industry news. But for
newcomers to the issue, the history of the UIGEA, its issues and problems that
it has created and the growing effects of the legislation might be new. For that
reason, we’re going to take a look at the origins of the UIGEA and follow it
through the two years that this law has been in place and the possible long-term
effects.
The UIGEA, or the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, was written and
pushed through into law by two Republican Senators, John Kyl and Spencer Bachus.
These two individuals wrote the UIGEA to specifically target the transactions
between offshore online casinos and US gamblers. The passage of the bill is one
of the most controversial aspects of the whole situation. The UIGEA did not
actually pass through on its own merits and the politicians actually attached it
as an affiliated piece of legislation alongside a must-pass security bill. It
was a midnight addition and those voting on the Safe Port Act, the must pass
legislation, were almost wholly unaware that the UGIEA was added.
The UIGEA passed and within days all of the major online casinos and internet
gambling companies that had been operating in the US market for years were now
forced to immediately pull out of the market or face prosecution from the US
Department of Justice. |
