Saying Goodbye to a Pro
The tennis industry is weeping this week as another star dies. The Michael
Jackson funeral and all of those preparations and goodbyes have overtaken the
world right now. But in the tennis industry, and indeed tennis enthusiasts and
online casino bettors, the death of young Mathieu Montcourt, a 24 year-old
player from France comes as a shock. Montcourt has been in the headlines a lot
lately because of his suspension over gambling at an online casino betting venue
on tennis matches. The courts ruled that Montcourt would face a hefty fine for
his previous betting activity and an eight week suspension. That suspension was
later dropped to six weeks because the judge gave leniency on the fact that the
player didn’t actually bet on any of his own matches.
Montcourt ban from the tennis courts all stemmed from gambling at the online
casinos and betting venues on 36 separate tennis events that occurred back in
2005. The judge’s ban from the game started just after his ban began –for six
weeks Montcourt would have been forced to lay low and merely observe the games.
Unfortunately the news is now reporting that Montcourt died of natural causes
and it just happened to coincide with his ban from the sport of tennis.
The Court of Arbitration of Sport has really come down hard on the players that
use online casino betting venues because of the threat that it has to the whole
integrity of the sports gaming industry. Montcourt was not particularly singled
out to act as an example although many in the industry thought that his
punishment was a little harsh. Instead, it is merely the judge setting a strong
precedence that land and online betting on sports by players will simply not be
tolerated. |
