Political Pressure for Casinos
A bit of a power play just went down in Ukraine this month as the president was
nearly forced to sign a bill into law that bans commercial gambling locals that
are located in residential areas. President Yuschenko had previously vetoed the
bill because of pressure from the land and online casino gambling companies
noting that the closure of these venues will result in rampant job losses in the
country. The president vetoed the gambling ban, noting that the implications of
the ban were unknown at this point and that he would not support the ban until
such a study was conducted –a definite plus to the online casinos operating in
these residential areas. But that didn’t sit well with the opposition party and
the party noted that it would overturn the president’s veto if he did not pass
the gambling ban.
The whole situation is a bit of a power play and an unfortunate state of turns
for the Ukrainian land and potentially future online casino gambling industries.
Like in the US, the president has the right of a veto even if the Verkhovna Rada
vote in favor of a new piece of legislation. The fact that President Yuschenko
changed his stance on the subject after the opposition party voiced dissent with
his decision indicates a unique power play in the country.
Right now, the gambling casinos and related venues have been able to operate in
residential areas without any issue. Now though, these establishments are banned
from those areas. There is no telling how this will affect the employment rate
in the country. One thing it does indicate though is the fact that Ukraine may
not be ready for online casinos just yet!! |
