Stopping the Persecution
The US online casino gambling industry has caused global controversy because of
its discriminatory enforcement of the laws that have specifically targeted
foreign gambling sites while also providing a protectionist market for the US
based gambling and betting companies. Although online casinos are banned
completely, both domestic and foreign, the US has a large and thriving betting
market which is closed off to foreign gambling companies under threat of huge
fines and strong action from the US Department of Justice. The international
community continues to demand that the US alter its controversial online
gambling legislation.
While that process is taking place, the Remote Gaming Association, an
organization that represents the interests of the European online casino
gambling industry, is demanding that the persecution and prosecution stop. The
EU is going to bat for the RGA with the US Trade Representatives and one of the
chief concerns voiced by the RGA is the fact that the Department of Justice is
specifically bringing up cases against European listed online casinos for
activity in the US market before the UIGEA was even enacted. The RGA key demand
is that the EU delegates negotiate a ceasing of the legal action against EU
internet gambling groups.
Basically, although the EU has previously negotiated closed compensations
agreements with the US because of the UIGEA and its impact on the EU gambling
industry, the European gambling sites themselves are less interested in
compensation and rather looking for the immunity from further unwarranted action
from the US. Several major EU online casinos and gambling groups have paid out
millions to the US as a way to just end the prosecution process and the RGA is
looking to negotiate that no more prosecution is directed toward European
internet gambling groups. |
