Malaysia Overrun by Online Casinos
The Malaysian government has made no secret of its dislike and intolerance for
the online casino gambling industry…so it’s pretty interesting that illegal
internet gambling has literally invaded the country. The Malaysian task forces
have shut raided and closed nearly 3,000 gambling operations this year alone,
but reports indicate that syndicates within the country are linking with
offshore companies to offer small illegal online casino gambling operations all
throughout the country instead of just in the capital city, where most of the
gambling had previously been concentrated. Malaysia’s Home Minister feels that
internet gambling is wholly negative for the country because it will to gambling
addiction and, down the road, increased crime rates.
The appeal of online casino gambling is undeniable –so is the fact that
regulation of the industry may very well be the only way that nations can
effectively control the spread of the industry. The internet is an extremely
pervasive medium and over the past five years failed banning regulations in
various countries are clearly indicating that there may just be no way to
out-right block the online casinos. The theory now emerging centering on the
fact that nations can better protect their gamblers with a regulated internet
gambling system in place rather than the underground markets that are bound to
crop up in regulatory voids, or when the pastime is criminalized.
In Malaysia right now, although the police are aggressively pursuing the online
casino gambling operations, the syndicates are so widespread and pervasive that
this offshore operation will be much harder for the government to effectively
find and shut down. |
