Opposing iMEGA's Actions
iMEGA’s attempts to overthrow the influence of the UIGEA, a federal piece of
legislation that blocks foreign online casinos and gambling groups, are worrying
some of the UIGEA’s most ardent supporters. iMEGA’s case has made it all the way
up through the courts and rulings at each stage of the appeals process have
given validity to iMEGA’s actions and the organization’s attempts to neutralize
the UIGEA through court mandates. Senators Jon Kyl and Orrin Hatch have both
actively attempted to alter the court’s decision on the UIGEA with their sphere
of influence within this issue. Lately, the focus has really centered on the
internet sports betting industry rather than the online casinos as a result of
several new US states looking to implement internet-based sports gambling
measures.
There is a lot of legislation in the works right now as several states are now
interested in boosting the amount of money coming into the state coffers by
expanding both land and online casino gambling related activities. iMEGA has
been really active in efforts to expand the US internet gambling and wagering
restrictions at the federal level and Senator Kyl in particular has actively
opposed all of iMEGA’s efforts at every stage of the game. Sen. Kyl is mostly
responsible for the ethically questionable passage of the UIGEA nearly three
years ago and he strongly blocked and rallied against any alterations to this
law in the intervening time.
Kyl’s latest efforts to stop iMEGA’s actions include a letter to the US Attorney
General, Eric Holder, about the need to uphold the federal legislation that
limits and state licensed land and online casino sports betting operations. As
there are several states now looking to expand state betting, and iMEGA is
actively seeking repeal of the Federal law that prohibits the expansion of state
betting, this might be one case that Sen. Kyl loses. |
