In a Gambling Utopia: Malaysia
The Malaysian government doesn’t seem to have learned a whole lot from the
example provided by other nations, at least where control over the online casino
gambling industry is concerned. Internet gambling is strictly illegal in
Malaysia and the government has spent a lot of money hunting down the illegal
gambling groups and prosecuting those involved in the illegal gambling rings.
The only problem is, more gambling rings just continue to crop up under the
government’s radar. This has led the government to actively begin a process of
blocking financial transactions much like the US’s flawed and controversial
UIGEA attempts. The UIGEA is a huge failure in the US market and online casinos
have just found more sophisticated ways to circumvent the transaction
restrictions.
This hasn’t stopped the nation from proceeding with the efforts. Online casino
gambling in Asia is largely unaccepted and the governments have taken great
measures to really censor what gamblers are able to access via the Web. The
online casino gambling industry is seen as a societal ill in much of Asia
because of a media-propagated correlation between the internet gambling sites
and high problem gambling levels.
The Malaysian news has been full lately of the police busts of these gambling
groups; it is a pretty dangerous market out there for the online casino gambling
ring operators. The government is on a witch hunt of sorts and has every
intention of following the internet gambling issue aggressively until the
illegal activity is eradicated or until new legislation passes through. Like
other markets, there is a fair bit of money that could be made from Malaysian
online casino gamblers, but even more pointedly, from a legal Malaysian betting
market. |
