Lowering EU Credibility
The European Union has had its hands full over the past several years with the
task of forcing the EU member states to operate according to free trade laws and
accept online casinos from throughout the Union. The fact that nearly a dozen
countries are operating gambling monopolies despite repeated cease requests and
negotiations from the European Commission reflects badly on the EU. The EU is
currently attempting to pressure the US into new regulations and legislation
where the offshore online casinos are concerned, but the US Trade
Representatives are not taking the EU seriously while the EU is still
negotiating with the monopolies.
The US situation is secondary to the fact that the European Union really has
dawdled on this situation and the dozen EU member-states with monopolies are not
inclined to change this legislation any time soon. The Commission has not had
the real power to force the rogue countries into compliance and until just this
past year has only used vague threats of further action from the European Court
of Justice. But right now there are still many online casinos and internet
gambling companies that are actively being prosecuted and fined by EU state’s
operating a gambling monopoly.
As for the effect of this on the US online casino gambling market, the US’
stance seems to be one of expectancy. Although there has been international
outcry over the US’s protectionist policies when it comes to the internet
gambling industry, the US is stalling for time for turning the tables, and
spotlight, back on the EU. |
