The BetonSports situation has taken a pretty interesting turn this week with
the announcement that Gary Kaplan’s family and former assistance have pled
guilty and agreed to turn over millions of illegal gambling dollars to the US
Department of Justice. These three individuals pled guilty but that has still
not changed Kaplan’s stance on the situation. To offset the fact that Kaplan
plans to take the fight all the way through the courts on this online casino
gambling case, the former CEO of BetonSports, David Carruthers has changed his
tune and entered a conditional guilty plea this week in the hopes to just bring
this situation to a close.
Both individuals are facing severe fines and jail time for their involvement in
the highly profitable illegal online casino gambling operations that operated
through BetonSports. Carruthers has actually been on house arrest since 2006 and
his court dates have been consistently delayed over the past three years. The
conditional plea states that Carruthers will plead guilty if the jail time
handed down does not exceed 33 months that he has already spent on house arrest.
The case has been a signature case of the US DoJ’s fight against illegal online
casino gambling and betting in the country and the guilty pleas that are now
coming through should perhaps expedite a resolution.
The only stickler in the case is Kaplan. As the founder of BetonSports, he is
facing some very serious consequences if he is found guilty on all of the
charges. Others from the internet betting operation have pled guilty to avoid
jail time and perhaps lessen the possible fines. Kaplan though insists his
innocence and plans to take his not-guilty plea all the way to the courts – his
court date is set on September 21, 2009. |
