Funding Efforts
The US government has a unique opportunity facing it this year as the first ever
Comprehensive Problem Gambling Act has been introduced in Congress and strives
to provide funding for problem gambling research. The online casino gambling
industry has received a bad rap over the past several years in the US because of
a perceived connection between higher problem gambling rates; the industry
research has indicated that this is not actually the case. But even so, the
Democrats are largely pushing efforts that would see the introduction of
legalized and regulated US gambling for offshore online casinos, and the new
National Problem Gambling Act presented to Congress would specifically carve out
funds for the study and prevention of problem gambling in the country.
The Act is quite solid and Keith Whyte, Executive Director at the National
Council on Problem Gambling wholly supports all of the efforts outlined in the
new act. Whether or not the UIGEA is defeated and online casinos are legalized
in the country the new act is necessary to provide more oversight for the land
gambling industry. If online casino gambling is passed in the US there will be a
lot of regulatory oversight, but that is not the case for the US land gambling
industry right now.
This bill would really look at providing a national approach to problem gambling
–something that is seriously lacking in the US right now according to Whyte.
There is a lot of concern over the online casinos and a boost in problem
gambling as a result, but there is very little national attention focused on the
fact that compulsive gambling is already a problem in the US, and one that needs
federal funding and support. |
