The Online Casinos Take the Fall
The is a definite problem in the United States and all over the world for that
matter that involves underage gamblers accessing the online casinos and various
internet gambling and betting sites. This is one of the biggest issues facing
the internet gambling industry actually, and although the internet gambling
sites have a lot of software in place to prevent underage gambling, it’s still
happening and still worrisome. A new study out of Oxford though sheds some very
new light on the situation in regards to just what the addictive behavior in
youth is stemming from. According to a professor at Oxford, Susan Greenfield,
it’s the fact that the children are on the computer for long periods of time,
more so than the online casinos themselves, that is the real danger.
The professor’s research is not intended to marginalize the very real issue that
has cropped up because of youth having access to online casinos and internet
gambling sites, but rather shed light on the computer and internet activity of
children. Her research indicates that rather than the obsession over blocking
the online casinos all over the world, the real issue may come from allowing
children too much time on the computer in the first place. She suggests that the
computer and internet time in general is harmful to children and that the huge
efforts to block internet gambling sites from the eyes of the youth is avoiding
the larger problem.
Basically, the research finds that the brains of teenagers are still in a strong
development phase and that internet time, just like the old adage about TV, may
rot their brain. The professor puts it a bit more eloquently noting that the
developing brain needs an array of stimulation at this critical growth time and
excessive use of computers and surfing online may be more harmful than the
actual internet content such as internet casino sites. |
