Trade Disputes Again
The US has its hands full again this month as the European Union is back at the
table with the US Trade Representatives and looking for a resolution to the many
trade disputes that are facing the US. One of the biggest issues that will be
addressed when the EU delegates meet with USTR Ron Kirk this month is the US ban
on foreign online casinos accessing the US market. This protectionist policy has
caused a lot of problems for the US over the past more than two years and the EU
is not willing to let the issue rest until the US government adequately alters
the current legislation (the UIGEA) or agrees to much larger trade
compensations.
For years now, under the Bush Administration, the US government denied that the
foreign online casinos and foreign nations had any claim to the US internet
gambling market. Now though, there is hope that the new trade delegates under
the Obama administration will be more open to negotiations and open to a
revamping of the controversial policies that have caused the brunt of the
problem.
The EU delegate is set to meet with the USTR and the two parties agreed that
this initial meeting is not designed to solve all of the trade compensation and
online casino gambling issues through negotiations right off the bat, but rather
a talk that would look to establish a time-line that both sides could follow for
the negotiations and target goals for the negotiation process. The foreign and
US domestic online casino gambling industries are waiting anxiously for the two
sides to come to a resolution –hopefully in the way of new US policy. |
