Democrats in Control
The election of Barack Obama last November was about the only hope that the
online casino gambling industry had for actually seeing a change in US internet
gambling legislation. With the Obama Administration comes an majority Democratic
Congress and, unfortunately, a failing US economy. The offshore online casinos
and US supporters of a regulated internet gambling market have long hoped that
the new administration would take on the internet gambling issue and rectify the
havoc that was wreaked by the UIGEA and the controversial support legislations
that were also passed through.
One of the key problems though facing the industry is the fact that the economic
crisis in the US has totally eclipsed nearly every other problem that has come
to pass. The Democrats may largely support the online casino gambling
legislation, and maybe the gambling related bills would pass if they ever made
it up for a vote – but they aren’t even making it up for consideration because
the government has delayed the hearings so that Congress can focus on economy
and healthcare related legislation and bills.
That’s the burn right now for the online casino gambling supporters, the fact
that they internet gambling bills have a lot of support from the Democrats, and
even a few Republicans, but they just haven’t had the time of day for
consideration. The three key online gambling related bills were up for
consideration and scheduled for a hearing this month, but last week a vote
decided to push the internet gambling related legislation back until they meet
for the next session – sometime in September/the fall. |
