Online Casinos Crumble WTO
The World Trade Organization is a powerful trade body that operates over all of
the major industrialized nations that have signed certain trade agreements and
international standards in trade. The WTO trade agreements are iron clad as long
as every nation within the trade agreements not only consents to operating by
those agreements, but to also accept the ruling and judgment of the WTO on trade
related disputes. The US and its discriminatory online casino gambling
legislation has the ability to topple the power of the WTO if the US does not
quickly begin to respond to the organization’s rulings and mandates on the
controversial UIGEA. More than two years ago the WTO ruled that the US was in
breach of trade agreements by enacting the UIGEA – and in the intervening two
years the US Trade Representatives have refused to negotiate new terms or alter
the legislation.
The World Trade Organization works because it is an international agreement made
by the heads of state from nations all over the world. These countries have
agreed to defer to the WTO decision on matters of international trade and the
breaching of trade agreements. But if the US chooses to continue ignoring the
WTO and keeps the UIGEA and online casino gambling legislation in place, it will
fundamentally shake the walls and foundation of this international and global
trade body.
The US is creating a pretty controversial situation with the blatant disregard
of WTO rulings that were decided by a panel of judges on several key issues that
revolved around the online casino gambling situation. Antigua won a WTO case and
the EU is currently in negotiations, and through it all the US has ignored the
fact that the UIGEA contravenes international trade agreements from the early
90s. That is an issue that needs reckoning with immediately. |
