Costs Swayed Government
A lot of speculation is circulating these days about the growing situation in
China – and I don’t mean the nation’s unethical occupation of Tibet, I mean the
government’s announced decision to force all new computers sold in the country
to contain specified filtering software. The Chinese government has really been
strongly fighting the growing prevalence of illegal online casino gambling and
decided to announced new filtering efforts that will take the ISP blocking
program even one step further. The decision to force Chinese computer and
internet users to government filtered content, even to block illegal online
casino gambling, has been met with international incredulity. And just when the
deadline was hitting, the government announced a pause in the launching of this
controversial law.
One of the possible reasons for decision to delay the launch of the “Green Dam”
filtering software mandate could concern the immense costs associated with
implementing such a wide scale mandate. Additionally, there was no telling how
effective this software would prove at blocking the pervasive online casino
gambling industry – though it would surely cause some pretty serious security
issues for the computer users.
Interestingly enough though, the government has delayed the software
implementation mandate but not canceled the new law altogether. The rest of the
world and the international online casino gambling industry and organizations
looking to protect internet have voiced some strong disapproval. Basically, the
organizations and companies are really pushing for the government to entirely
abandon this filtering plan rather than even continue down this line of control,
which could have a very negative impact on the global censorship of internet
content. |
