Online Casino Control Reconsidered
The Chinese government has made headlines lately because of the government’s
announced plan to force all computers sold in the country to contain a specific
content filtering software. Last week’s announcement caused a furor of
disapproval throughout the world because it is such an over-the-top step aimed
at allegedly only preventing illegal online casino gambling and pornography. The
Chinese government has been consistently opposed to internet gambling for some
time now and the announced content filtering plan is one way that the government
could ensure that personal computers don’t even have access to the controversial
internet gambling sites. The global community though showed outcry at that level
of control and the potential long-term consequences such a rule could cause down
the line even outside of the online casino gambling industry.
The basic thrust of the situation was that the Chinese government was looking
for force all new computers sold in the country to have the “Green Dam”
filtering software installed and in place so that the government could begin to
block online casinos from all new devices. This move though would severely
restrict internet freedom although the Chinese government claimed it would only
use the software for the purposes of blocking online casino gambling and to
block pornography. International organizations feared that this was the
beginning of strong internet censorship in the country.
But even the Chinese government seems to have had some reservations about
implementing this new law and has delayed the full launch of the online casino
filtering software just mere hours before the laws announced implementation
deadline. |
