Beshear at it Again
The Kentucky horse racing industry is in trouble –unfortunately there is no
denying that fact, but the solution apparently does not lie in expanding the
state gambling industry at the racetracks. Governor Steve Beshear has made
headlines all over the world for his efforts to confiscate the domain names of
foreign listed online casinos. The internet gambling industry has revolted and
that case actually made it all the way to the state Supreme Court for a
decision. The most recent situation though indicates that Governor Beshear’s
plans for the state just aren’t that popular with the rest of the politicians in
office. More pointedly, Beshear’s latest legislative attempt to expand gambling
in the state was blocked by the state Senate.
The thrust of the new legislation was an attempt to introduce video slot gaming
machines at the state racetracks. The reasoning behind this is simple, Kentucky
racetracks have reported significant losses over the past couple of years as the
online casinos compete for business and as gamblers just go to racetracks in the
neighboring states because of their slot machines and gambling opportunities.
Unfortunately for Beshear, the state House approved the measure easily, but the
Senate was not quite so easily swayed. The Senate voted firmly against the
measure much to the woe of the industry. The horse racing industry in the state
has noted that it will likely face closures in the coming year or two if land
casino-type games are not instituted at the Kentucky racetracks. Beshear calls
for the government to do something that will assist this signature Kentucky
institution – apparently though the others in the government don’t feel like
this hasty legislation is quite the answer they need to solve this particular
problem. |
