A Word from the PPA

The Poker Players Alliance couldn’t stay silent on the recent Dikshit settlement – there has been just too much media attention and outrage from the online casino gambling industry to let this one slide by. The online caisno gambling industry has really been keen to point out to the media, the US politicians, and players that the Dikshit settlement was not an admission of guilt by the internet gambling industry from pre-UIGEA US gambling activities.

Rather, the PPA recent statement instead emphasized that the settlement agreement and guilty plea was a personal decision by the former Party Gaming founder, Anurag Dikshit – his admission of guilt on Wire Act charges has no bearing on the pleas and settlement agreements between the US Department of Justice and foreign online casinos currently in negotiations with the DOJ.

The Chairman of the PPA, Alfonse D’Amato, made a statement the settlement agreement and guilty plea are not, in fact, a legal precedent for the case as some have worried. Other online casinos and gambling companies in negotiations with the DoJ have feared that Dikshit’s settlement agreement would set a dangerous precedent and would strip the other companies of all of their bargaining power.

D’Amato though paints an entirely different picture and emphasizes that one guilty plea is not enough to counteract the fact that the US Wire Act was not designed to apply to the online casinos and internet betting sites but instead specifically relates to telephone betting, as was previously ruled by the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
