Still a Threat?
There are few in the online casino gambling industry who don’t cringe just a
little when they hear the name Jon Kyl. Kyl is one of two individuals almost
wholly responsible for the US’s currently ridiculous and flawed internet
gambling legislation. And beyond just being behind the implementation of the
UIGEA, Kyl is a continued supporter of the US ban on financial transactions
between foreign online casinos and US gamblers. Kyl has taken every possible
opportunity to speak out against the internet gambling industry and he has stood
by the UIGEA despite widespread criticisms. The latest action from Kyl is news
that Kyl questioned the newly appointed US Attorney General about his plans for
US online gambling policies.
Specifically, US Attorney General Eric Holder’s hearing session was designed as
a way for Senators to ask questions and verify that the newly appointed
individual is up to the task. For Senator Kyl, there was one main concern on his
mind – the preservation of US legislation that bans the foreign online casinos.
Kyl questioned Holder about his plans to enforce the UIGEA regulations.
Interestingly enough, Holder affirmed that he would in fact continue to ban
transactions between US banks and online casinos.
This though is not necessarily a blow to the online casino gambling industry as
one might assume. As Attorney General Holder is obliged to uphold US laws as
they are passed through Congress. The internet gambling industry is still
holding out hope that pro-gambling politicians like Congressman Barney Frank,
and others will find a way to not only neutralize or overturn the UIGEA, but
that they will also pursue ways to reverse the midnight drop legislation that
passed through the UIGEA’s controversial regulations. |
