Support Expenditures
The liberalization of the online casino gambling industry in the UK has
significantly increased the government’s tax revenue over the past year and
allowed the UK Gambling Commission unprecedented authority and control over
gambling regulations and policies. With all of the money coming into the
government from the online casinos though, it’s surprising to learn that the UK
spends a mere GBP 10 per person on problem gambling support measures – this from
the nation that expects other nations to model their internet gambling
regulations! Other nations spend as much as GBP 44 per person on gambling
support measures but the UK is sadly falling behind…and watchdog groups in the
UK warn that high levels of problem gambling and gambling debt are the result of
insufficient support efforts.
The UK has done a superb job in ensuring that all of the online casinos and
internet gambling companies have responsible gaming measures in place that
include voluntary exclusion by the gamblers themselves. Several of the companies
have an additional measure that includes software that automatically flags
gamblers displaying problem gambling and betting behaviors.
But while the online casinos themselves have taken the initiative to prevent the
worsening of the problem gambling situation, the government has really only
added marginal additional support for potentially problem gamblers despite the
fact that the more liberal gambling market means that not only is there a higher
chance of problem gambling worsening, but the government has more funds than
ever before to solve this problem yet is choosing to stay static. |
