A Reversal of Visits
The negotiations between Antigua and the United States are certainly not
concluded as of yet, but new developments in the negotiation talks are slow but
surely occurring and the online casino gambling industry is holding out hope
that a resolution is in the works. The US government’s UIGEA and additional
policies regarding foreign online casinos has been deemed illegal by the World
Trade Organization on numerous occasions…but that hasn’t deterred US authorities
from continuing to enforce these questionable policies. In a protective action,
the small island nation of Antigua and Barbuda took the issue with US policies
to the WTO and was actually granted dispensation to infringe on US copyright
laws.
With the US’s powerful entertainment and music industries at risk, the US Trade
Representatives finally came to the table last year and began what is now a very
lengthy negotiation process. Negotiation deadlines between the two countries
have come and passed and there has been little news for some time now. The
latest development though sees a USTR, John Veroneau making his way to Antigua
for the talks. Thus far the negotiations have occurred in Antigua with the
Antiguan Finance Minister, Dr. Errol Cort flying to the US on numerous occasions
to discuss the online casino gambling issue at hand.
This reversal of the normal situation could bode well since USTR is the US
delegate in the situation and Antigua will be arguing the issue on home ground.
Several individuals are rumored to plan on attending the negotiation talks as
the two countries attempt to find a suitable resolution that appeases Antigua on
the online casino gambling front and for the US, maintains current protectionist
legislation while upholding copyright laws. |
