Online Casinos Relieved
The online casino gambling industry was able to breathe a sigh of relief this
week as the Kentucky Court of Appeals overturned the previous ruling that would
have allowed the State of Kentucky to seize as many as 141 domain names. The
entire situation bordered on absurd and the amount of media attention showered
on the entire circus of an event also bordered on absurd. The fact that the
situation even had to go to an appeals court had individuals all over the world
shocked by the audacity of the US. Sites from online casinos to information
portals and even bingo sites were all susceptible to the planned seizure. But
luckily, the ruling from the Kentucky Court of Appeals was handed down on the
same day that the online poker gambling industry gained hope that a new
president may affect some real change in US gaming and gambling policies:
Inauguration Day.
The recent ruling was definitely a relief and means that it could be the end of
the issue if Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear lets the situation rest. But even
with the relief, there is still a fair bit of frustration from the online casino
gambling industry. Gambling sites that were facing seizure and were unsure about
the Court of Appeal’s ruling were forced to take costly alternative actions in
an effort to preserve their gambling brands and business if the seizure order
stood up in the Court of Appeals. Online gambling sites such as Bingo Knights
and 123 Bingo changed their domain names last month in reaction to the first
court’s ruling.
Additionally, organizations such as iMEGA and the PPA were forced to move
manpower from other initiatives to the Kentucky situation. In the end, the
Appellate judge agreed with lawyers representing iMEGA, the registrars, and the
online casinos – the current Kentucky State law can not be interpreted to
include gambling domain names as an “illegal gambling device” no matter which
way you look at it. |
