Raiding the Internet Cafes
Gambling in Jakarta has become a very real problem according to local police –
and sadly a problem that the police department has a very hard time tracking
because of a lack of man power and a lack of the skill base to monitor internet
based issues. Online casino gambling and betting is illegal in the region and
yet gamblers are able to often use internet cafes as a way to access the
gambling sites. The latest coup for the local police was a bust of four
individuals allegedly providing gamblers access to online casinos through an
internet café. The police arrested four individuals implicated in the gambling
bust – the police noted though that the mastermind of the operation remains free
and they are searching for him.
What’s really unfortunate for the four arrested is the fact that the Jakarta
police openly admit that they lack the manpower and equipment to really
successfully track down those operators offering online casino gambling in the
city. At the same time, this latest bust was seemingly successful. At the end of
December, the police raided the internet café, confiscated a small amount of
money (roughly US $454), a flash drive, and two computers. The police have not
yet analyzed the computers but if the information on the computers implicates
the four suspects in illegal online casino gambling activities, each person
could face as long as five years in prison.
Online casino gambling is a serious crime and although the police department
lacks the resources to effectively track down all of the illegal operators and
sportsbettors, they are still working on the situation – a fact that should
serve as a message of warning to anyone considering opening such an
operation…the consequences are awfully steep. |
