Projections for 2009
With the dawning of a new year, the online caisno gambling industry is preparing
itself for some very big changes. Predictions just two years ago were so very
favorable for internet gambling. Analysts predicted that online gambling sites
would flourish and continue extremely profitable growth over the following five
years until trickling off around 2011. The predicted growth though has been a
bit stunted now by the global recession – although many online casinos and
gambling sites are still showing positive growth and decent revenues, this
growth pales in comparison to industry statistics from just a year ago.
A plus for the online casinos as we move into 2009 is the strength of the
gambling market within Europe. The troubles with the US market are largely a
thing of the past (except for a handful of companies in negotiations with the US
authorities) and the European market is really just beginning to fully open to
internet gambling. The European Commission is slowly but effectively breaking up
the land and online casino gambling monopolies within EU member-states. There
are certainly still a handful of countries that continue to attest to their
right to operate monopolies, but the online casinos are working their way into
these markets regardless (case in point, Sweden).
With all of that in mind, 2009 looks as though it is still a positive year for
the online casinos. Although booming growth is not necessarily in the near
future, there are daily new and exiting developments for the industry. Italy is
only just beginning to open its market. Asia is still a prospect for many gaming
companies, and Eastern Europe’s online gaming market is actually still growing
pretty rapidly. |
