False Positive for Player
A land slot machine player in New Zealand, Verna Brown, had a tough break last
week when the land casino informed the player that a NZ$42 million jackpot was
actually a result of a malfunction. The Dunedin, New Zealand was thrilled and
surprised to hit the jackpot and was equally surprised when the casino manager
called in a technician to ensure check the machines for malfunction. And as much
as Brown was surely exited to imagine herself an millionaire, the manager at the
gambling venue was waiting on pins and needles to ensure that the payout was no
where near that large – otherwise the business would surely go under!
The land slots were located at the Law Courts Hotel and generally run to fun but
minor winnings for the players gambling at that venue. Brown was gambling at the
slots when the machine registered a win of NZ$42 million. Brown knew that
something was a bit off though when the malfunction light was flashing and there
was no huge congratulations from the hotel. Brown has taken the entire process
in good spirits and notes that her dreams of a millionaire life were a “brief,
wonderful moment.”
This sort of situation really isn’t particularly common at the land and online
casinos and gambling venues – slot and poker machines are checked regularly to
ensure their software is functioning properly. Luckily for Brown there wasn’t a
total loss, the hotel later contacted the winner to let her know that she had,
in fact, won a jackpot of NZ$500 – not anywhere near the same sort of win but
fun and useful nonetheless. |
