Budget Deficit Leading to Online Casinos?
The economic recession in the United States is predicted to affect the economy
pretty hard over the next couple of years – and with talks of deficits and
losses in state fiscal budgets the state governments are getting pretty
desperate for ways to balance the budget without compromising their principles.
Since online casino gambling is blocked at the federal level the only place that
state governments have some play is through the land gambling industry. Ohio is
one of the US states that has stood the strongest against the legalization of
land slots and gambling – the Ohio voters have repeatedly rejected efforts to
bring in land gambling.
And interestingly enough, one of the main opponents of the land and online
casino and slots industry in the state, Governor Ted Strickland, is rethinking
his stance of gambling as the state’s two-year budget is looking pretty dismal.
Strickland is still firmly against land gambling as a positive move for the
state – but he is now looking at the revenue potential as a possible motivating
factor for seeking the legalization of slots at racetracks within the state.
Ohio residents, naturally, are a little taken aback by Strickland’s openness to
the prospect of land casinos and slots in the state. But with $7 billion in
predicted budget deficit within the next two years, Strickland is likely
considering the land gambling industry only as a way to see the state through
the current economic recession – as a matter of principle he is still firmly an
opponent. |
