Teen Online Culture
The culture of the internet has changed in the past several years – the new
generation of internet users are not only young – they’re using the internet in
new ways and building morals and foundational elements of themselves through the
use of social networking sites, online casino poker sites, and file sharing
sites. A Swedish research study was just announced – the study is powered by a
Swedish university and aims to study teen morals and how aspects of the internet
are shaping teen morals. The study will be the first of its kind in the world –
the researchers hope to identify social patterns that are formed in teens from
their interactions with the internet – all with the idea of altering future
legislation and regulations to better protect teens from issues stemming from
online casino poker playing and use of social networking and file sharing sites.
The research study is scheduled to run over four years and will rely on the
participation of several companies that have agreed to work with the
researchers. Some of the companies participating include: MySpace, The Pirate
Bay, and Svenska Pokerförbundet. Additionally, the research study will follow a
group of ninth graders over four years – in depth interviews will ascertain the
teens’ use of online casino poker sites, file sharing and social networking
throughout the four years. The researchers also have plans for larger scale
studies in the future.
The issue of teen morals shaped through their online habits is a subject that is
really very rarely addressed in governmental legislation and regulations.
Naturally the government as instituted restrictions and the such to protect
teens from the online casinos and poker sites as much as possible, but teens are
still able to access free-play poker gambling sites and thus build up their
gambling habits and tendencies. |
