Economy is a Huge Concern
The slowing global economy is one of the top concerns for 2009 and beyond within
the land and online casino gambling industry. Beyond just a slowing economy some
issues with individual national governments has increased the pressures on the
industry and worsened the economic situation for the gambling industry. More
pointedly, restrictions in the US market have really setback the online casinos
from further development and expansion as they have spent the past two years
recovering from the US’s UIGEA. Within the European market, countries like
Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and others continue to defy EU policies while
the UK has severely burdened the land casinos with harsher taxation regulations.
The trends for 2009 do not indicate that the land and online casinos will fare
much better this year – in fact it’s going to be a bit of a holding pattern over
the next year. And while Spectrum Gaming has predicted that new technologies
will continue to bring in survival levels of income for the industry, this is
definitely shaping up as a period of survival of the fittest. There are just too
many setbacks present right now for the land and online casino gambling
companies to thrive.
All over the world the national governments are attempting to pass regulations
and legislation that both benefit the state coffers while also allowing the land
and online gambling companies enough profit margins to continue operating within
each market. And while the UK is a bit of a safe haven for the internet gambling
companies, land casinos are facing some very tough taxation legislation, coupled
with the increased competition in the market. |
