Speedy Trial in the Works
The latest news out of China indicates that the countries largest internet
gambling related trial is now underway and the defendants in the case are all
looking at some hefty fines and possible jail time. One positive aspect to the
case however, is the fact that the 20 defendants in the case entered a guilty
plea on the charges of operating an illegal online casino sportsbetting site.
Online gambling and betting is wholly illegal in China and the gambling ring
operated for a year and a half and generated huge sums of money despite the fact
that the site and gambling ring were all underground.
This is actually one of the largest trials globally relating to illegal online
casino gambling activity – with 20 defendants facing prosecution, this is a
strong message to other would-be gambling ring leaders that the Chinese
government is serious about restrictions on internet gambling. According to
information released as the case goes to trial, the defendants netted 1.6
million yuan throughout the time the online betting site was in operation.
As for the fact that a guilty plea has been entered into the record, that means
that the entire trial will take less time and the Putuo District People’s Court
will make a decision that much sooner. Some of the specifics of the gambling
ring indicate that because online casinos are so difficult to operate in China,
land betting shops in the country were then linked up to Western betting sites
to offer Chinese gamblers a slew of sportsbetting options. |
