Positive Uses for Social Networking
Problem gambling is an issue that has been making headlines in the online casino
gambling industry for years now – as the industry expands everyone on both sides
of the fence is looking for new and innovative ways to ensure that the
prevalence of problem gambling does not increase as a result of the rise in
internet gambling activity. The National Council of Problem Gambling (NCPG)
announced that this week is problem gambling awareness week – and in an effort
to spread the word in new ways and reach more gamblers who are at risk, the NCPG
launched a YouTube campaign that it has high hopes will go viral and touch a lot
of people throughout the week.
The Chair of Awareness week for the NCPG, Jeff Beck, noted that YouTube was
decided as the main vehicle for the message this year because of its popularity
with the target demographic, “kids and young adults.” One of the hopes though is
that in addition to individuals just watching the public service announcements
that will air on YouTube throughout the week, that those affected by problem
gambling at the land or online casinos, or in any capacity really, will also
make PSA-type videos and post them to the site.
Although online casino gambling is illegal in the United States, that doesn’t
even remotely mean that the activity is blocked – rather it has gone underground
into an unregulated black market where those that participate are at an even
higher risk for problem gambling. The NCPG hopes that by using the element of
social networking that the message will reach more individuals than ever before. |
