Sending a Clear Message
China is sending a clear message to the online casino gambling industry this
month as the trials of twenty accused of running a gambling ring are now in
their sentencing phase. Although the internet gambling industry in China is a
highly coveted market, the Chinese government is not really budging on its
restrictions against the pastime. Land gambling is a different matter
altogether, but gambling at the online casinos is strictly forbidden, as it
betting through the internet and really any for of gambling that takes place
through the Internet. China’s gambling ring bust yielded twenty individuals that
were apparently directly connected with running the illegal gambling ring since
2006 until their arrest.
Online casino gambling, especially when it is done under the radar of the
government, is extremely lucrative. Gambling rings that operate in countries
like China often make bundles of money because they are not paying taxes on
their money and there is no one checking to ensure that the odds they offer to
their gamblers are fair and honest. That is one of the reasons that China is so
solidly cracking down on online casinos and internet gambling rings operating in
the country – they are very appealing for criminals in the short term.
The trials though are now in their sentencing phase and those involved in the
online caisno gambling ring are looking at facing jail terms as a long as six
years. There are still some waiting for their sentences but already one of the
ring leaders got the maximum of six years – the least any of the twenty will
receive is a one-year term. |
