An Obtuse Connection?
Sporting leagues all over the world have in place some very tight restrictions
on just what their players are allowed to do –what promotions they can
participate in and what they can be seen sponsoring. The UK gambling and poker
industry is now scratching their head just a bit by the new commercials from
PokerStars.net that feature well-known hockey player Mats Sundin playing on this
newly launched free-gaming site. Usually, sports players are not allowed to
connect themselves to the online casinos and internet gambling and betting sites
in any official capacity because there is an element of that promotion that then
undermines the integrity of the game.
But this latest promotion between PokerStar’s new free-play, entertainment only
online casino gambling site and Mats Sundin was actually approved by the
National Hockey League. The new commercials airing right now feature Sundin
playing this new game that doesn’t involve the exchange of any money and
therefore isn’t apparently forbidden. This is a pretty fine line for many in the
industry considering the fact that PokerStars’ other site is one of the most
prominent online casino poker gambling brands on the market right now.
But even with some renewed speculation from the media, the NHL stands by its
decision and even by the endorsement free that Sundin was paid by PokerStars to
promote this new gaming site. For PokerStars, since the company isn’t going to
have to change the campaign it’s pretty much standing by the theory that any
publicity is good publicity. |
