Thoughts on Obama
A new board is in the development stages in the UK right now as the UK
government and the Gambling Commission itself recognize a need for a greater
focus on the issues and policies surrounding problem gambling. The new board
will act in an advisory capacity to the existing Gambling Commission, which
oversees all of the UK’s land and online caisno gambling activity. In addition
to interfacing with the Gambling Commission, initial reports indicate that the
newly forming board will also provide guidance to the Department of Media,
Culture, and Sport in all matters that concern land and online casino problem
gambling.
There have been mixed reports out of the UK – some indicate that problem
gambling, also referred to as ludomania, is on the rise in the UK as a result of
the huge influx of online casinos, bingo, and poker gambling sites that now have
access to the UK market as well as certain advertising rights and media rights.
As concerns grow in the public the UK Commission has decided that a separate
board that focuses on the very specific issues and obstacles presented by
problem gambling would best serve the UK gambling public.
The new board has already been formed and according to the initial information
Baroness Neuberger is heading up the efforts with a pretty stellar support team
of other professionals and top names in the industry also lending their support
and knowledge about this field. 2009 will mark the first year that the
Commission is in operation and as such a professor at the Center for the Study
of Gambling, Peter Collins, will advise the new board as they move forward this
first year in providing solutions to problem gambling in the UK. |
