Not So Good for Online Casinos
The transcripts have been released for the confirmation hearing of the new US
Attorney General – and just as has been previously reported, the outlook is a
bit bleak for the online casinos and internet gambling companies hoping for an
immediate change when the new Obama administration came into office. Eric
Holder, the newly appointed Attorney General, spoke quite particularly about his
intentions to uphold the UIGEA regulations during his time in office – the UIGEA
regulations were passed through as a piece of midnight drop legislation in the
ending weeks of former President Bush’s time in office. The online casino
gambling industry has hopes that these highly controversial regulations will not
be wholly enforced – but the Department of Justice at least now plans to
continue implementation.
The Obama Administration has made some very controversial and often celebrated
changes to already in the mere week he has been in office. Unfortunately though,
with the state of the economy, the economic stimulus plan that is in
development, and other major concerns, the issue of gambling at domestic and
offshore online casinos has fallen to the wayside. With no hope of the gambling
issue taking precedence for the President, many were looking for a bit of hope
in the new Attorney General.
The transcripts from his confirmation hearing though, in which he was questioned
by Senator Kyl (a long time adversary to the online casino gambling industry)
indicated an outright and unquestionable support for the UIGEA. AG Holder is
actually directly connected to some very strong anti-internet gambling groups in
the US. Most pointedly, Holder supports initiatives launched by the NFL to keep
internet casinos out of the States. |
