More Threats from Holland
The Dutch online casino gambling industry is one of the handful of EU markets
that continues to operate under a state controlled monopoly despite EU
regulations and policies that suggest that state-run monopolies blog the
implementation of free trade policies. Though the Dutch government continues to
attempt regulations and legislation that blocks illegal domestic and foreign
online casinos at the financial transaction level, this has only been minorly
enforced. The Dutch Justice Minister has apparently taken a renewed interest in
the online casino gambling industry this year and has announced an warning to
not only the internet gambling sites, but also the banks that continue to
process the transactions.
At this point there is no telling how far the Dutch government plans to take
this entire situation. There are many in the EU who are closely monitoring the
situation, prepared to step in and cause a stir if foreign listed online casinos
and gambling sites are punished for their place in the Dutch market. The funny
thing about the entire situation is the fact that the Dutch government passed
the new anti-gambling legislation after the UIGEA was passed and highly
criticized in the US market. Blocking online casinos at the banking level just
doesn’t work in the long run and there is very little hope that the Dutch
government will have much more success with the endeavor than the US government
has had over the past 2 and half years.
But, at the same time, online casinos should heed the warning that the Dutch
government is on the warpath again against the internet gambling industry and
its activity within the Holland gambling market. The economy is tough right now
and ousting some of the foreign and domestic competition could actually net the
Dutch government extra cash when it comes to taxing state-sanctioned gambling
sites for their online gaming revenue. |
