Canada Taking Heat for Online Casinos
The Ontario government has been lightly discussing the issue of rapid growth of
the online casino gambling industry within Ontario and Canada as a whole – and
some analysts, scholars, and watchdog groups are pressing for the officials to
take the whole thing a bit more seriously. Canada has long been criticized about
its internet gambling policies throughout the past two years and even more so in
recent months as the economic crises leaves some pointing fingers at the online
casino gambling industry as a culprit of some of the country’s financial
problems. There are really very few statistics and comprehensive studies done in
Canada to assess not only the prevalence of online casino gambling, but also the
prevalence of problem gambling throughout the country.
As the economic crisis hits very close to home and Canadians are really
beginning to feel the pressure there is an even bigger push from online casino
gambling opponents for the government to finally address the issues surrounding
the legality of regulating internet gambling coming out of the sovereign nation
of the Mohawk tribe.
A professor out of York University has painted a pretty dire picture of the
situation if it is to continue as is, without government regulatory involvement.
Klassen observes that online casino gambling is going to really overpower the
land gambling industry and will eventually involve nearly every component of
land gambling that is currently available event the simplest of tasks like
buying lottery tickets. All of this is not inherently bad, it’s the fact that
the online casinos are unregulated from the government that causes concerns that
the youth and problem gamblers will face exploitation as the industry continues
to grow. |
