More Finnish Ridiculousness
The European Union is a veritable battle zone these days over the ongoing issue
of cross-borders online casino gambling. The EU operates on a platform and
policy of free trade of goods and services between EU member-states – but there
are several EU countries that still hold a monopoly over land and internet
gambling companies…and that doesn’t sit well with the European Commission. The
Commission has worked very hard over the past several years to bring as many as
a dozen rogue countries into compliance with the EU’s position on online casino
gambling monopolies. At this point though, the negotiations have gone on for
several years and a handful of countries continue to refuse to come into
compliance – Finland is one of those that not only continues to operate a
monopoly, but has actually strengthened the regulations on its land and online
gambling monopoly.
The Finnish company Veikkaus is the sole provider of land and internet gambling
services – even the lottery is under its control. Veikkaus has been in operation
in Finland since the 1940’s and generates enormous amounts of daily revenue
because it is the sole vehicle for Finnish gamblers to gamble in the country.
Foreign online casinos and even land betting companies have eagerly eyed the
Finnish market and the potential revenue for years but very strict and harsh
laws regarding illegal gambling companies have kept many from entering the
market.
All of that could be soon to change (well, soon is relative, sooner rather than
later is more appropriate). The Commission has announced that it is finally
taking the steps necessary to bring Finland up on official charges for its land
and online casino gambling laws that violate EU free-trade policies. This means
that Finland could find itself scrambling for an adequate justification before
the European Court of Justice. |
